When we first started looking for a place to call home in Panama, we explored many of the same destinations that attract retirees, remote workers, and expats from around the world. We visited beach communities, larger cities, and several mountain towns. Each had its own appeal.
Then we discovered El Valle de Anton.
What we thought would be a short visit quickly turned into something more. The more time we spent here, the more we realized that El Valle offered something increasingly difficult to find: a balance between modern convenience and a connection to nature.
Today, we are proud to call El Valle home.
A Climate That Makes You Want to Be Outside
One of the first things that attracted us to El Valle was the weather.
Nestled inside the crater of an ancient volcano and surrounded by mountains, El Valle enjoys a spring-like climate throughout much of the year. Mornings are cool, afternoons are comfortable, and evenings are perfect for sitting on the terrace with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
After living in warmer climates, we found ourselves spending more time outdoors and enjoying activities that had become difficult elsewhere.
Nature at Your Front Door
It is not unusual to wake up and see toucans in the trees outside your window.
That may sound like something from a travel brochure, but it is simply part of everyday life here.
The area is surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls, hiking trails, and wildlife. Whether you enjoy birdwatching, photography, hiking, mountain biking, or simply taking a walk through town, nature is always just a few steps away.
One of the things we love most is that adventure does not require planning. Some days it starts right outside your front door.
Better Connectivity Than We Expected
One concern we had before moving was internet reliability.
Like many people considering life in a smaller mountain town, we wondered whether we would have to sacrifice connectivity for lifestyle.
We were pleasantly surprised.
Today, El Valle offers multiple internet options, including fiber and Starlink. Remote work, video calls, streaming, and running online businesses are all very possible here.
For those who depend on reliable connectivity, the available technology continues to improve every year.
Solving the Power Challenge
Like many areas of Panama, El Valle occasionally experiences power interruptions.
Rather than viewing this as a major obstacle, we saw it as a problem with solutions.
We invested in solar power and battery backup systems, which have dramatically increased our energy independence and reliability. Combined with modern internet options, it allows us to enjoy the beauty of mountain living without giving up the conveniences we rely on every day.
For us, the trade-off has been well worth it.
A Community That Feels Like a Community
One of the biggest surprises was the people.
El Valle has a unique mix of local families, business owners, retirees, entrepreneurs, and international residents who genuinely care about the community.
You quickly begin recognizing familiar faces at coffee shops, restaurants, markets, and local events.
It still feels like a town where people know each other.
In today's world, that is something special.
Endless Opportunities for Adventure
If you enjoy staying active, El Valle is hard to beat.
The area offers:
- Hiking trails and waterfalls
- Mountain biking routes
- Birdwatching
- Horseback riding
- Canopy and adventure activities
- Weekend markets and festivals
- Day trips to beaches and nearby towns
There is always something to do, but there is never pressure to do anything at all.
That balance is part of the charm.
Why El Valle Became Home
For us, El Valle represents something we were not expecting to find.
A place where we can enjoy modern conveniences, reliable connectivity, incredible natural beauty, and a welcoming community all in one location.
It is not the biggest town in Panama.
It is not the most famous.
But it may be one of the most livable.
And every morning when we see the mountains, hear the birds, and enjoy the cool air, we are reminded why we chose to make El Valle our home.
